Description

Words is a handy utility for searching a dictionary and solving word unscrambling problems.

Words v2.0 contains two utilities (findword and unscramble) and a dictionary. The dictionary lists words, each on its own line. You can replace this dictionary with a similar file if you so choose. (I've been known to use the Scrabble(tm) Dictionary on occasion.)

Findword is a utility to search for a word in the dictionary. Typing in a word will search for that word exactly in the dictionary. Using a "*" will match any number of characters and using a "?" will match exactly one character. For example:
tr*ing - all words that begin with "tr" and end with "ing"
?ing - all words that have 1 letter, then "ing"
sp*???ing - all words that start with "sp" have at least 3 letters, then end in "ing"
Note: Due to a bug, you will have to use the mouse to click on the "FindWord" button.

Scram is a utility to unscramble words. Simply type the scrambled word in the box and press "unscramble". Wildcards ("*", "?") are not allowed in this entry.
Note: Due to a bug, you will have to use the mouse to click on the "Unscramble" button.

Screen Shots

History

  • 3/24/2000 - Version 1.0 released.
  • 9/27/2001 - Version 2.0 released.

Known Bugs

  • There's a user interface bug in that pressing enter closes the dialog. I don't think the program was orginally like this, but newer versions of the Windows Properties dialog made this so. I'm not sure. Either way, clicking on the buttons with the mouse always works. I'll get around to fixing the whole user interface in a newer version.

Future Additions

  • Bug fixes, UI enhancements, readme enhancements... eventually.

The file I downloaded was named uanbrid.dict In order to make it work I opened it in word and saved it as a .dic file and it was great from there.

I haven't tried this software so I have no clue if it works but the majority of the comments submitted to this page make me feel that this isn't worth a crap.I have a cheat I use in Literati that I downloaded as a trial version that you had to pay $20 for after you had used the program for a week but like so many things on the internet that should be free but isn't I found a way around the paying for it and I get the cheat for free and it was so simple to do.Alot of people actually pay $20 for a cheat to use to play online games.People the knowledge is out there all you have to do is find it and read it almost everything online you now have to pay for that WAS once free and the key to it all is numbers and letters so if you are good at math then use numbers and if you are good at spelling then use letters, either way the smart & determined one's will try and put forth the effort the one's who are dumb or to lazy or who would rather pay will never see the light at the end of the tunnel, which is everything that you have to pay for online is free somehow to sum it up but people pay for it anyways.Alot of the programs I use would cost me $100's of dollars but I used my brain and I enjoy it and I keep my $ in my bank account and let it draw % instead of paying it to some online bigshot who thinks he can always make people pay for a free thing!

I'm going to have to agree with Cedric. A crock.
(1) This program is free. Not $20, not $100's of dollars.
(2) Not everything worthwhile is free. Try eating on a $0 budget.
(3) Someone pays for everything. In this case, I pay to let you download software that I wrote. I pay to let you comment on software that you haven't tried. You're welcome.
(3) I'm not a bigshot, just a single programmer. I'll take that as a professional compliment, as unprofessional as it was.

Holy crap people... Peter is offering this thing for FREE. He's not making you pay money for it only to find out that you don't like it. The download is 718K which takes 5 minutes on a slow dialup connection. Download it for FREE. If you don't like it, instead of coming on here and telling Peter that his software "sucks ass," say "thanks for letting me try out your software... It's not for me." It's not like it's a 100 megs and takes 2 days to download... let's show a little appreciation!

Once again, thanks for supporting the free software community.

If you changed a few things then tried to sell this it would actually sell ok. Thank you for your software, keep up the good work. Just dont stop here, as I can see you have a lot of potential. -John

Awesome program! Been using Words since the old Dos version in 2000! I just found version 2.0 for windows. The only suggestion I could possibly make for this first-class piece of software is to please default the enter key to the relevant 'Findword' or 'unscramble' rather than closing the program. I have a habit of pressing the enter key after keying in a word only to close the program and having to go through the hassle of making the program load all over again. Keep up the great work!

hello there ! just saw all earlier comments ! . lets see, loved the program, and loved it even more coz its FREE (thats how things should be on the net!). anyhows, like the example above TWEING can come up with "twinge", but amongst the alphabets, u can also make words like "get","tie","wing","win","wet", and so on and so forth. could you please include this feature in your next version, whereby you can unscramble words from the alphabets and some are left over? this would REALLY help me with Scrabble !! love the program btw!

Downloaded Words, grabbed a couple of text dictionaries and used sort and uniq to generate a "personalized" dictionary. Works fine for unscrambling jumbles or anagrams where each word uses all the characters. Not the tool of choice for finding multiple variable length words from a set of letters but doesn't seem to have been intended for that use so no complaints -- this knife makes a lousy fork isn't a valid complaint. As for your "ganeet", Words using my dictionary came up with geneat, negate and tegean. Negate is the likely choice since I had to resort to Google to find the other two.
